Hiking in Jotunheimen

Hiking suggestions in Jotunheimen include Besseggen, the child-friendly Hulderstigen and Norway's highest mountain, Galdhøpiggen.

Besseggen

The Besseggen hike takes seven to nine hours, depending on your pace. Start the hike at Gjendesheim and take the boat back the next morning, staying overnight at Memurubu Mountain Lodge, which offers accommodation of good standard.  The boat back to Gjendesheim also departs once in the afternoon.

Aursjøen culture trail

This is a path that gives you a nice walk, while you learn about how people struggled to water their fields and crops in earlier times. Annual rainfall in the district is similar to that in the Sahara Desert, approximately 300 millimetres a year. Information boards along the route give you information about the old spectacular irrigation system, which is still in use. The walk follows a man-made ditch at the beginning, dug out to bring the life-giving water from the mountains to the fields down in the valley. At the small Flåtåtjønn Lake, a dam was constructed to collect melting water; here it is also possible to spot the remnants of a reindeer pitfall system.
Halfway you will find a small open stone hut, where you can prepare a cup of coffee or tea. The place is suitable for a stop, it is advisable to bring a packed lunch.

Location: Close to the Aursjøen Lake, on the outskirts of Reinheimen National Park. Follow rv. 15 westwards from Bismo, continue to Gjøingsli, after three kilometres follow signposting to Aursjøen, and drive a further 10 kilometres up the mountain side. There is a car park at the top, from where you can see the lake. Start to the right from the information board. Five kilometres roundtrip, easy walking, rather flat. Allow up to two hours. Well trodden path marked with red colour.
The season stretches from mid-June to the end of September.

Hulderstigen in Sjodalen

A nature and culture trail of about five kilometres in easy terrain. There are information boards along the path. Part of the path crosses the Stuttgonglia nature reserve. Hulderstigen is signposted from rv. 51. The trail is easy for children and is both educational and fun. There are opportunities for fishing along the route.

Galdhøpiggen

Norway's highest mountain at 2,469 metres above sea level. Galdhøpiggen is a favourite for adults and children all summer. You can find your own way up from Spiterstulen in about four and a half hours or come with a guide crossing the glacier from Juvasshytta Mountain Lodge in about three hours. A guide costs NOK 180 per person (children up to 15 NOK 120). Departure daily at 10:00 between 20 June and 15 September (also at 11:30 during July and the first half of August). Meet at Juvasshytta Mountain Lodge half-an-hour in advance. There are daily guided tours from Raubergstulen for staying guests.
