Cities and places

Trondheim was founded in 997 and was Norway’s first capital. It is home to the Nidaros cathedral. The mining town of Røros is Norway’s only mountain city. Its timber houses are all on UNESCO's World Heritage List. The Dovre mountain area is good for hiking and skiing.

Landscape

Trøndelag has great and varied nature. From a rocky coastline in the north via deep forests at the Swedish border to a vast mountain area in the south. Trøndelag is famous for its salmon rivers, especially Namsen.

What to do

Stay at a fishermen’s cabin by the coast while you spend your holiday fishing in the sea, or fish for salmon in one of the many rivers.  Experience the St. Olav's Drama at Stiklestad in summer. There is a varied and well developed network of hiking trails in the Bymarka forest outside of Trondheim. A musk ox safari is to be recommended.

History

One of the many historic sites is Stiklestad where King Olav Haraldsen fell in the battle of Stiklestad in 1030. He was buried in Nidaros, which was the early name for Trondheim, and the Nidaros Cathedral was erected over his grave. During The Middle Ages this cathedral was a pilgrim site on par with Santiago the Compostella in Spain. Today, Trondheim is the third largest city of Norway.
