Hiking in Sunnfjord

Explore the Jostedal glacier, the Storehesten peak or the Fossestien trail in the area of Fjord Norway that is known as “the home of the waterfalls”.

Sunnfjord includes the municipalities of Førde, Gaular, Naustdal and Jølster in Fjord Norway. Here you will find plenty of hiking options in varied terrain, from coastal walking to glacier hiking. The region is also famous for its many waterfalls. There are over 50 in this area which is known as "fosseheimen" (the home of the waterfalls).

The main hiking season is in July and August. Hiking possibilities the rest of the year depend on weather conditions and the amount of snow.

Hiking possibilities

Many of the region's top hikes are suitable for both adults and children. The routes are usually well marked using a coloured grading system, and maps are available at the local tourist offices in Førde and in Skei, Jølster.

Top hikes in Sunnfjord

Fossestien in Viksdalen
Fossestien is a 21-kilometre long trail from Gaularfjellet to Viksdalen, with an altitude difference of 500 metres. The picturesque path has been used by livestock and people for generations. Along Fossestien you pass several large waterfalls and lakes.

Storehesten in Bygstad
Storehesten, which means "the big horse" in Norwegian, is one of the highest peaks in the area at 1,209 metres above sea level. Storehesten is a characteristic landmark that overlooks the historic Viking landscape of Dalsfjord.

The Jostedalsbreen Glacier in Jølster
In the old days, people only ventured on to the glacier when it was necessary. From the 19th century onwards, traffic increased and even tourists started to find their way up on to glacier.

Hafstadkleiva in Førde
This hike starts in the center of Førde and winds its way up the mountain Hafstadfjellet, which rises 706 metres above sea level. At the top you are awarded with a splendid view of the Førdefjord.

Sandfjellet in Naustdal
At 1,249 metres above sea level, Sandfjellet is the highest mountain in Naustdal. This is a popular hike both in the summer and the winter.

Accommodation

There is a wide range of accommodation on offer in Sunnfjord, from standard cabins to idyllic farms and modern hotels. In Viksdalen, close to the popular Fossestien (waterfall path), you will find the camping site Hov Hyttegrend. Another camping site with an ideal location for hiking is the Jølstraholmen Camping in Jølster.

How to get there

Førde is situated 170 km from Bergen and 450 km from Oslo. Widerøe has daily flights from Bergen and Oslo.
