There is something special about summer in Grimstad. Lazy days enjoying the smooth rocky shore, idyllic town walks along narrow lanes, visits to cafés, shows and concerts – or, for the more active, exploring the beautiful and varied southcoast scenery by bicycle.

Grimstad is renowned for its stunning archipelago comprising an array of islands and islets for visitors to enjoy. Most of these gems are designated recreation areas and are open to the public. In the 1920s, the local conservation association “Selskapet for Grimstad Bys Vel” embarked on a project to purchase the islands, and private donations have enabled this to continue. Over the years a large part of the archipelago close to town has been acquired, and the islands are open to locals and visitors alike. An ongoing conservation programme is also in place. Hire a boat at the tourist office and explore the archipelago on your own, or join one of the guided trips. A map of the various recreation areas is available from Grimstad Tourist Office.
