The town of Lillehammer serves as the gateway to Gudbrandsdalen. The main road E6 and the Dovre Railway go through Gudbrandsdalen to Trondheim.

By car

One of the main roads between Southern and Northern Norway, the E6, goes through the Gudbrandsdalen Valley. 

If you choose the local roads through the valley you will experience more of the nature and culture in Gudbrandsdalen. The gateway to Gudbrandsdalen, the Olympic town of Lillehammer, is 2 hours and 30 minutes from Oslo and 5 hours from Trondheim. 

From the south to the north of the Gudbrandsdalen Valley, you use approximately 3 hours by car.

By air

The nearest airport is Oslo Airport Gardermoen. At the airport you can hire a car, or hop on a train or bus to Gudbrandsdalen. Trains and busses from Oslo stop at Gardermoen on their way to Gudbrandsdalen.

Between Gardermoen and Lillehammer it is 145 kilometres.

By train

The Dovre Railway is the main line of the Norwegian railway system between Oslo and Trondheim. The entire line is 553 kilometres long. The Dovre Railway arrives in Lillehammer about 2 hours and 15 minutes after departure from Oslo, and runs through Gudbrandsdalen and over the mountainous stretches of Dovre.

A branch line, the Rauma Railway, leaves the Dovre Railway at Dombås.

There are frequent train departures that run 12 to 18 times daily from Oslo to Lillehammer, and 4 to 6 times daily to Trondheim. Dovrebanen stops in every major town in Gudbrandsdalen.

By bus

Nor-Way Bussekspress and Lavprisekspressen have several daily services to/from Oslo through Gudbrandsdalen.

Approximate travel times with bus: 

  • Oslo – Lillehammer: 2 hours and 35 minutes
  • Lillehammer – Otta: 2 hours
  • Otta – Trondheim: 3 hours and 30 minutes 
  • Otta – Ålesund: 4 hours and 50 minutes
