What to do in Hemsedal

Fly fishing is at its very best in Hemsedal. Biking routes are well signposted. Hiking, riding and golf are other popular activities.

Fishing

Hemsila is one of the best rivers in Northern Europe for fly fishing for brown trout. There is a joint fishing permit covering 4 rivers, 18 lakes and a zone for fly fishing only. Guided fly fishing and 3- or 7-day fly fishing packages.

Mountain hiking

There are guided walks to Veslehorn every Tuesday and Friday from 9 June to 4 September (medium graded walk).

If you would like to know more about Hemsedal’s nature, history and landscape, you can join a mountain walk guided by a Culture Pilot from Hemsedal every Saturday from 20 July to 3 October. The programme varies from week to week.

The Top 20 walking programme was a great success last summer. The mountain walks are graded from easy (green and blue) to more demanding routes (red and black). The last two summers (2006 and 2007) more than 40,000 people from five different continents walked in the Hemsedal mountains and wrote themselves into the Top 20 tour books.

Golf

Hemsedal has one nine-hole courses and one 18-hole course as well as low green fees. The two courses are very unlike with various challenges. Both courses are usually open from late May until the beginning of October.

Horse riding 

Ride in beautiful forests and mountain terrain. One hour rides, children's rides, half day rides, day trips, riding camp or one week tours on horseback from hotel to hotel.

Biking

14 biking routes (240 kilometres) are marked and graded from easy green and blue to more advanced red or black trails. There are short day trips on gravel roads to more demanding trips with overnight stays at the many mountain cabins in the area. The terrain is varied, from asphalt, gravel and cart roads to
more challenging tracks and paths. You can take cycles up into the mountains on the new eight-seater chair lift.

Visit mountain farms

There are several traditional mountain farms open to the public. As well as meeting the animals, you can taste or buy local specialities such as butter, sour cream, cheese, flatbread or kvikaku.

Canoeing

You can hire canoes for canoeing on Lake Vannin from for example Hemsedal Tourist Information Office.

"We rented canoes from Norske Opplevelser and had a nice paddling tour at Vannin. We also rented bicycles. We especially liked that the biking routes were so good sign posted."

Climbing

Norske Opplevelser offer introductory courses and guiding. Try the via ferrata climbing route up to Vesle Røggjin. Suitable for all those over 12 years who can stand to have fresh air below their feet.

Paragliding

Oslo Paraglider Club has its base in Hemsedal and offers tandem flights or an intensive nine-day course to learn to fly yourself. 

Trout Safari 

Join the exotic tree-hour trout safari in the Hemsila River. With a wetsuit, snorkel, diving mask and flotation vest you can swim with the trout and experience their world. Every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 June to 18 October 2008.

The trout safari is a high thrills and no skills activity for anyone over 12 years who can swim.

Price: NOK 650. Guide and equipment included.
