Here you can find a lot of undisturbed nature and a lot of good fishing spots. The region has played a central role in the country’s history, and has impressive defence works from various periods.
One of these are Høytorp Fort, Mysen, which is Norway's greatest inland fortress. In the region you will also find the Halden Canal, the oldest canal in Norway, with northern Europes highest locksystem.
There are about 56,000 people living in Indre Østfold. Askim and Mysen are the largest cities.
