The first national park of Norway welcomes you to its high peaks and rounded and friendly landscape.

Mysuseter, Høvringen and Grimsdalen are all important gateways. A complex grid of marked routes for hiking and cross-country skiing is available, and you can stroll through old pine woods or reach for the more demanding peaks such as Rondeslottet, the seventh tallest mounatin in Norway.

Perhaps you will be lucky enough to see reindeer from the oldest wild reindeer herd in Norway, traces of old reindeer traps or other signs of ancient life here?

Horse riding

Enjoyable riding in forest and mountain terrain at Høvringen and Heidal.

Guided trips raging from one hour to one week.

Hiking

Rondane's peaks, such as Rondeslottet, Storronden and Smiubelgen, have names melodious in Norwegian. The glaciers left a rocky landscape, so wear sturdy hiking boots.

A four-day tour will take you around Rondane's largest continuous massif, divided by Lake Rondvatn and the valleys of Illmanndalen and Langlupdalen.

Read the article Tour suggestions in Rondane for information about recommended hiking trips.

Rafting and river kayaking

Sjoa is one of Europe's finest rivers for rafting and river paddling. Between mid-May and September, rafting trips are arranged down the white waters of the Sjoa River.

Rafting is an American sport, involving guided trips in big inflatables. Professional guides take you safely down the gorges and passages of Sjoa.

Sjoa is a fast-flowing and exciting river, extremely suitable for river canoeing. The river’s extensive catchment area and glacial melting in the summer secures consistently-good conditions. The river is permanently protected against hydro-electric development.

Clubs come annually from Middle- and Eastern Europe to train and compete in the beautiful, glacial-green Sjoa river. The national centre was completed in June 1991, and is a wonderfully fine complex, which river-sports enthusiasts reap much pleasure from.

The rafting companies, such as Sjoa Kayak Centre and Heidal Rafting, provide life-vests, helmet and paddles, while a wet-suit can be hired, or is often included in the price. You should take warm clothing, for instance a wool jumper and rain coat.

Minimum age is 18 (16 if accompanied by parents).
