The Flåm Railway and Kjosfossen

Go for a ride with the Flåm Railway - an incredible train journey from the mountain station at Myrdal on the Bergen Railway, down to Flåm station nestled in the innermost corner of the Aurlandfjord.

Each year, this exciting stretch of railway attracts people from all corners of the world, making the Flåm Railway one of Norway's major and most spectacular tourist attractions.

The train journey provides some of Norway's wildest and most magnificent scenery. On the 20-kilometre long train ride you can see rivers cutting through deep ravines, waterfalls cascading down the side of steep, snow-capped mountains and mountain farms clinging dizzily to sheer slopes.

The mighty Kjosfossen Waterfall, a favourite photo stop along the journey, cascades down the mountain side. It is Kjosfossen that delivers the electricity to the Flåm Railway.

The fjords

The American newspaper Chicago Tribune has included the Norwegian fjords on their list of seven wonders of nature. In Flåm there are several ways to experience the unspoilt fjords.

If you want to get in close contact with nature and wildlife, you can hire kayaks or rigid inflatable boats (RIBs). Or you can join a guided fjord cruise with larger ferries and boats.

You can explore the Aurlandsfjord and protected Nærøyfjord, both branches of the Sognefjord. This area represents some of the most extreme, dramatic and beautiful fjord scenery in the world.

UNESCO has now included two Norwegian fjords on its renowned World Heritage List, and the Nærøyfjord is one of them. The Nærøyfjord is perhaps the most spectacular arm of the Sognefjord. It is the narrowest fjord in the world, at one point only 250 metres with mountains towering 1,800 metres above its tranquil waters.

Norway in a nutshell®

Bergen - Voss - Gudvangen - Flåm - Oslo
Norway in a nutshell® is one of Norway's most popular round trips. It is possible to do the trip in one day, but it is highly recommended to stay a night or two on the way, for example in beautiful Flåm.

The highlight of the tour is to be found in the Sogn region, where you will experience some of the most beautiful scenery of Western Norway. The trip includes the Bergen Railway, the Flåm Railway, the Sognefjord and the Old Stalheimskleiva Road.

If you take the Norway in a nutshell® tour in the low season, the feeling of being close to nature is even more intense.

You can start the round trip in Bergen or Oslo or from one of the stops en route, such as Voss or Flåm.
