Getting to the coast of Trøndelag

The islands of Hitra and Frøya are situated about 130 kilometres southwest of Trondheim.

By car

When driving from Trondheim, follow the E39 to Orkanger. Orkanger is located 40 kilometres southwest of Trondheim. From Orkanger, follow rv. 714 all the way to Hitra. Rv. 714 passes across Hitra and on to Frøya.

In order to pass through the Hitra tunnel, 260 metres deep and one of Europe's deepest tunnels, you need to pay a toll fee. There is no charge to pass through the subsea tunnel between Hitra and Frøya.

On the trip to Hitra you will experience varied nature with plenty of large mountains, fjord arms, angling lakes, waterfalls, red deer and plenty more.

If you wish to hire a car, there are several car hire companies to choose from at Trondheim Airport Værnes and in the city of Trondheim.

By bus

The bus company Trønderbilene offers daily departures from Trondheim to Hitra and Frøya.

By boat

Kystekspressen is an express boat that will take you to Hitra from Trondheim or Kristiansund. Hitra is located in the middle between Trondheim and Kristiansund. The boat trip takes approximately two hours. The boat passes a number of picturesque sites, so lean back and enjoy the voyage.

By plane

Trondheim Airport Værnes is the closest major airport and is located
160 kilometres from Hitra.

There is also an airport for small aircrafts on Frøya.
