About Finnmark

Finnmark is diverse and magnificent, varying from precipitous and rugged coastal landscapes to peaceful, mountain plains. You will enjoy genuine coastal culture and hospitality here.

There is excellent deep-sea fishing along the entire coast of Finnmark. You'll also find some of the best salmon rivers in the world here. In addition there are over 60.000 lakes, mainly with trout and char, but also grayling, pike and perch.

Species

The most common species are cod, halibut, saithe and catfish. You’ll also find good salmon rivers. In addition there are over 60.000 lakes, mainly with trout and char, but also grayling, pike and perch.

All year.

License for fishing in rivers and lakes

For fishing in salmon rivers, all persons over the age of 16 must purchase a fishing license costing NOK 220, and a fishing permit for each individual river. Fishing license is required for inland fishing. Angling for saltwater fish is free, but you are not allowed to bring more than 15 kilos of filet out of the country.

Fishing in Hammerfest

Not far away from Hammerfest you can go to four different places which offer excellent condition to make a fish holiday. At Sørøya, Seiland and Kokelv you will find a good place to catch the big one and at Skaidi you can fish in one a good salmon river. Hammerfest is a modern city where new architecture replaces the reconstruction buildings. The city has an exiting history from the Pomor trade, through a city in flames, arctic hunting and fishing, and now energy and gas. If you walk around in the city or visit some of the museums you will find a lot of details about Hammerfest.

How to get to Hammerfest
Flight to Oslo and from there by plane direct to Alta or to Hammerfest via Tromsø. If you choose to go to Alta you can go by public bus to Skaidi, Kokelv or to Hammerfest.  If you go direct to Hammerfest you have to go by ferry to reach Seiland and by Fast boat to reach Sørøya. You can reach Skaidi and Kokelv by public bus or you can rent a car.

  • Alta – Hammerfest: 140 kilometres, about two hours
  • Hammerfest/Alta – Skaidi: 60/80 kilometres, about one hour
  • Hammerfest/Alta – Kokelv: 80/100 kilometres
  • Hammerfest – Sørøya: 30 minutes by boat   
  • Hammerfest – Seiland: 30 minutes by car/bus and ferry

Fish species
Cod, Halibut, coalfish and wolf fish are the most common species for sea angler in this area. In the near by lakes and rivers you can catch the best quality trout and char.

  • Cod: 25 kilos
  • Repparfjord River: More than 10 tons salmon

Season
The best season for sea angling is from March to October.
The best season for salmon fishing is June and July.

Equipment
At all sea angling destinations you can rent a boat and it is possible to rent or buy all necessary fish equipments.  

Freshwater fishing licence
Visitors to the county are permitted to fish for freshwater fish with rod, hand line or otter trawl on the condition that they purchase a fishing licence.

Fishing permit for salmon fishing
In addition to the fishing fee, a separate fishing permit must also be purchased to fish in salmon rivers. These permits can be purchased in the vicinity of rivers. Inquire at nearby kiosks, camping sites, petrol stations, tourist information offices, or sporting goods shops.

Fishing at Nordkyn - exotic fishing villages

Nordkyn offers the five fishing villages of Mehamn, Kjøllefjord, Skjånes, Gamvik og Dyfjord, with natural as well as cultural experiences .This is also the realm of the king crab.

Go fishing on your own or with an experienced local fisherman who will show you the best fishing spots for Redfish, haddock, black pollock, atlantic cod, atlantic salmon, halibut, monkfish, skate, king crab.

Fishing at the North Cape - Nordkapp Camping

As from 1 May 2009 you can take part in the new North Cape fishing programme. On the North Cape the record for cod and line halibut catch stands at 140 kilos. (The record for professional fishermen stands at 300 Kilos).

Angling package "Helnes"
We recommand the angling package "Helnes" for those who enjoy a stay in our new and comfortable fishermen's cabin and rent a Skager 660 motor boat.

Accommodation
Accommodation is a four person newly built angler hut in Skipsfjord. The hut has a living room, a fully equipped kitchen, bathroom and two bedrooms.

Boat
A 20 foot Skager 660 motorboat (6.85 metres) with a CE license and equipped with a Garmin GPSMAP 520S (chartplotter, GPS, echosounder), flashlights, water pump, flares and life vests. The Skager has a wheel house and an inboard Yanmar 3YM30 diesel engine. Built in 2008.

Price
NOK 16,100 per week. The price does not include diesel.  

Angling package "Opnan"
We recommand the "Opnan" angler arrangement if you want to stay in the renovated and comfortable angler hut for four persons and hire a Skager 660 motorboat without house.

Angling package "Valan"
We recommand the angling package "Valan" for anglers who wish a faster motorboat (Willys600) and a stay in a bungalow at Nordkapp Camping approximately one kilometer from our privat harbour.
 
Accommodation
A bungalow for four persons situated at Nordkapp Camping around 1 kilometre from our privat marina. The bungalow has a living room, a fully equipped kitchen, bathroom and two bedrooms.

Boat
A 20 foot Nor Yacht Willys 600 motorboat (6.85 metres) with a CE license and  equipped with a Garmin GPSMAP 520S (chartplotter, GPS, echosounder), flashlights, water pump, flares and life vests. The motor is a Johnson 70 bhp 4 stroke.

Price
NOK 14 000,- a week. The price does not include fuel.

Repvåg and Sarnes

If you dream of a realy big catch, Repvåg and Sarnes are good places to try. The Finnmark coast is rich in fish stocks. The people here have made a living from fishing for thousands of years. 

Accommodation
Repvåg Hotell has 71 rooms with shower/toilet and there are eight fishermen's cabins/apartments with self-catering for two to eight people.
The hotel is situated on the mainland about 80 kilometres from the North Cape. The hotel is a genuine reconstructed fishing wharf, furnished and decorated to safeguard the Northern Norwegian coastal culture and atmosphere.

The unique maritime restaurant which seats 120 people, features charming décor made from driftwood and historical objects from the fishing industry.

Sarnes fishermen's cabins
Idyllic location in smines on the Sarnesfjord on the island of Magerøya (North Cape). The resort in Sarnes opened in 2002 and now comprises three fishermen's cabins in Smines and in Sarnespollen. Sarnes is a good base for trips out to the fishing banks in the open sea, or onto the fjord to fish for cod, pollack, catfish and halibut.
