Local food

Mo i Rana and the Arctic Circle Area have for centuries been a meeting point for tradesmen from the surrounding areas and from Sweden. This has given the area an excellent mix of food made from arctic ingredients.

  • The company Arctic Rein og Vilt is a national provider of all kinds of high quality reindeer products.
  • The farms Stenhaugmo and Straumbotn have several well-known cheese products.
  • The area around Lake Røssvatnet is known for fish products such as "rakfisk" (half-fermented trout or salmon) and smoked trout and salmon.
  • The Sami Wilderness Farm in Bleikvasslia produces and sells reindeer meat and bread products.
  • Islands such as Lovund and Træna produce local fish products for the whole world.
  • Litlehaug Farm at Hugla grows herbs and makes jam and jelly.
  • Pruglhei Farm is known for its different farm products. Their cured ham, which has received excellent reviews from Italian producers of cured ham, is their number one product.
  • The best ambassador for local products is the chef at Meyergården Hotell, Svein Jæger Hansen. His book, Polarsirkelmat, gives you a lot of pictures and descriptions on how to make arctic tapas.

Places to eat

  • Karenstua on the island of Myken offers the most delicious local fish meals in intimate and beautiful surroundings. The meals are served in the host’s living room.
  • Meyergården Hotell uses local fish, cheese, birds and reindeer as a part of their arctic menu.
  • Lovund Fisherman's Hotel focuses on local fish dishes, but can also make you other local food.
  • Klokkergården Guesthouse at Rødøy serves local food in beautiful surroundings in old, refurnished buildings.
  • The Sami Wilderness Farm in Bleikvasslia serves Sami food and bread made in the old, Sami way.
  • Lille Målvatn Mountain Farm serves local dishes made of reindeer, fish and birds far up in the mountains close to the Okstindan Glacier.
  • Umbukta Mountain Farm serves traditional food in the old trade station close to the Swedish border.
