See the northern lights

The northern lights, also known as the aurora borealis, are at their most frequent in late autumn and early spring. October, February and March are the best months for auroral observations. However, remember that you are at the complete mercy of nature. Local weather can suddenly decide to obstruct your view with clouds.

The best places to observe the northern lights are away from the bright city lights.

Northern lights experiences are offered throughout the county from September to March. These ecperiences also include fishing, dog sledging or a culinary experience in a lavvu (a Sami herdsmen’s tent).

Between November and January, the sun is below the horizon and this is a special time with the magical blue light. When the sun returns, the snow-covered mountains are illuminated in a tone of pink. Traditional celebrations greet the sun’s return.

Dog sledging

Dog sledging trips are offered throughout Troms, with options ranging from an hour to a week. You may choose the duration that best suits you. Some of the trails cross into neighbouring Finland.

Off-piste skiing

Summit ascents by ski are an extreme adventure. This activity demands previous off-piste skiing experience. The tours are run by certified guides and routes are determined by snow conditions in the mountains.

Cross-country skiing

Cross-country skiing tours of various lengths and degrees of difficulty are available throughout the county. Marked trails, guided tours and organised trips through the local hiking association make for large variation.

Alpine skiing

The alpine skiing centre of Troms is Målselv Fjellandsby.

Fishing

Winter fishing trips take place in larger boats and are organised as group activities.

Ice fishing is possible only during winter. Most lakes in Troms are ideal for ice-fishing.

Learn about the Sami

Sami cultural experiences with reindeer sledge rides offer a better insight into the lives of the Sami.
