Geography
Rauland is a part of Vinje municipality wich is the largest district in the county of Telemark, covering a ground area of 3,117 square kilometres. As 80 percent of the district lies higher than 800 metres above sea level, it is a typical mountain region.
Vinje municipality has many large, open spaces, of which Hardangervidda mountain plateu is the largest and perhaps best known. The road E134 over the Haukelifjell Mountains from Drammen to Haugesund makes Hardangervidda one of the most easily accessible mountain regions in Norway.
Culture
Rauland is known for its many authors, artists and musicians and a rich cultural heritage. The museums in Vinje, Raulandsakademiet, Telemark University College and Mjonøy Handicraft and Cultural Center are among the many cultural institutions that pass on the cultural heritage of which the region is so proud.
The people
People have lived in Rauland for centuries. The earliest signs of life are from 5,000 years ago, when people survived by fishing and hunting, or producing iron. Farming was introduced later and quickly became the most important means of livelihood. It is only relatively recently that people started to work in transport, mechanical industry, forestry and tourism.

In the summer you can join the catamaran M/B Fjellvåken on a guided cruise on Lake Møsvatn, take a day trip to the Hardangerfjord, visit numerous museums and exhibitions, join handicraft courses at Raulandsakademiet, hike on marked trails, go horse riding, go cycling, fish in clear mountain lakes, hunt for small game or take part in the many exciting activities for young and old alike.
In the winter season the area offers fantastic skiing opportunities for all, with alpine skiing slopes, a spectacular snowboard park, mile upon mile of groomed cross-country trails and Norway's largest toboggan centre at Vierli.
Rauland also offers tempting activities such as dog sledging, snowmobile rides on a track, snow rafting and many other exciting winter activities.
