Elk safari in Rauland

Join a guide and driver on a minibus safari at dusk to see the King of the Forest – the elk. Elks have been important to Norwegians since the animals first arrived in the country after the last Ice Age. They have been an important part of the Norwegian food chain, and lately as a social gathering point around hunting.

The biggest elk in Rauland is 2.3 metres tall, weighs 500 kilos and can become 20 years old. The elks are active during the day, but they are easiest to spot during the dusk and dawn.

Hiking

Rauland offers a network of more than 90 kilometres of marked hiking trails varying in difficulty. The hiking trails lie between 700 and 1,100 metres above sea level, and are shown on the map "Turkart Rauland" which can be bought at Rauland Tourist Information Office.

The most popular and spectacular hikes are to Falkeriset, Te-hytta and Dansarsteinen.

Cycling

Go on  a cycling holiday using Rauland as a starting point, and choose between cycle routes of varying length and difficulty. Raulandsfjell hires out bikes in the months from May to October, and the tourist office has brochures on cycle routes.

Horse riding

Rauland Ridesenter, one of Norway's leading riding centres, offers horsemen and -women of all ages, from novice to expert, indoor training, trips in the mountains and much, much more.

The stables, which house around 30 well-trained horses, adjoin a large riding hall. There is also an outdoor arena and a cross country course located in breathtaking scenery.

Accommodation at Rauland Ridesenter can be arranged. Riding tours last from three, four days up to a week.

Fishing and hunting

In Rauland you can fish in several lakes for trout and char. All you need is a licence, which can be bought at the tourist information office or online at Inatur. Inatur sells licenses for small game hunting in two different areas; Rauland Statsallmenning and Berunuten Vest.

Courses at Raulandsakademiet

During the summer and weekends Raulandsakademiet arranges shorter courses, mainly in the field of arts and crafts.

Activities at Raulandsfjell and Vierli

Raulandsfjell offers four wheel drives on a prepared course for children and adults. Boats, canoes and bicycles for hire. There is a large outdoor play area with for example a trampoline, a volleyball court and an obstacle track.

At Vierli Turistsenter you can visit the petting zoo, where children can experience goats, ducks, rabbits and more at first hand.

Vierli also has a large outdoor play area with pedal go-karts and pedal tractors. There is also an outdoor ball game area/playground with two football goals, basketball baskets, a badminton/volleyball net, a giant bouncy castle and a Tarzan slide for children. All free of charge and always open.

Rauland Mountain SPA

Enjoy a relaxing treatment at Rauland Mountain SPA after an active day in the mountains. The spa is located at Rauland Høgfjellshotell.

Car Walks

Car Walks is a concept aimed at people who want to combine going for a drive with interesting and suitably long hikes in relatively easy terrain. Both the car trips and the walks have their own route guides with sketch maps and information about the routes. You can buy sketch maps and tour descriptions at the tourist office for NOK 10 each.

Boat and canoe hire

Raulandsfjell has motor boats and canoes for hire, for excursions on Lake Totak.
