Telemark's magnificent and ever changing scenery is made for ski sports and enjoyment for the whole family.

Telemark can offer childrens' adventure trails and gentle slalom slopes and sheer drops where the challenges are many. Here you will find thousands of kilometres of well prepared ski trails in postcard scenery, snowboarding and modern alpine slopes for the most fastidious alpine skier.

Of course, you can also choose from a wide range of holiday cabins, apartments, tourist or luxury mountain hotels.

Here are some of the main winter resorts in Telemark:

Gautefall

Gautefall can accommodate almost 1,000 guests and is particularly well-suited for families. The cross-country trails begin at the hotel/ski resort and stretch across pleasant, gently-sloping and shifting terrain between 500 and 800 metres above sea level.

The alpine slopes at Gautefall are right next to the Gautefall Hotel complex, and range from 350 metres to 1,200 metres.

In December 2008, Norway's best biathlon arena will be opened at Gautefall.

Rjukan and Gaustablikk

Rjukan is situated in the midst of dramatic and magnificient surroundings in the north of Telemark. The skiing conditions are excellent both for alpine, as well as for cross-country skiers.

Other winter activities in Rjukan and Gaustablikk are for example ice climbing, ski sailing, sledge rides, ice fishing and dog sledge racing.

The Gausta Railway, a battery-powered carriage on rails, transports you approximately 860 metres horizontally into the mountain. At this point there is an intermediate transfer station from which a shuttle line runs upwards at an angle for 1,040 metres to a height of 1,800 metres above sea level.

At the top there is an exit which leads passengers out on to the so-called Tuddalstippen, just below Gaustatoppen Mountain Chalet. Off-piste skiing from Gaustatoppen is popular for trained skiers.

Vrådal

Try alpine skiing and snowboarding at Vrådal Panorama Ski Centre, or cross-country skiing in the mountains and forests surrounding Vrådal

Vrådal Panorama Ski Centre is one of Telemark's largest ski centres, with 5 lifts and 15 slopes. An 8-seater chair lift assures no long lift queues.

Vrådal has approximately 40 km of cross-country ski trails connected to most of the accommodation facilities. The trails run through both forest and mountain terrain.

Rauland and Haukeli

Rauland and Haukeli have some of the best cross-country trail networks in Norway, with 200 kilometres of groomed tracks. The skiing season nomally lasts from December to April.

With its good combination of downhill slopes and a wide choice of cross-country ski trails, Rauland has long been a traditional snow activities destination for the whole family. It is one of Telemark's largest alpine skiing destinations consisting of the three ski centres Rauland Ski Centre, Vierli Ski Centre and Raulandsfjell Alpinsenter, offering altogether 16 lifts and 39 ski runs.
