Tall mountains and narrow fjords

Stryn - Geiranger - Hellesylt - Hornindal - Stryn
This is the classic mountain and fjord trip which runs through the Strynedalen Valley, up to Strynefjell (rv. 15).

The tour can be combined with driving the Old Strynefjell Road, one of Norway's national tourist routes, to Grotli. Continue on twisting roads to Geiranger. There you can enjoy a one-hour ferry trip on the majestic Geirangerfjord. The trip continues through Hornindal (rv. 60) and past Lake Hornindalsvatn, the deepest lake in Europe (514 metres).

Total driving time: Three - four hours.

The length of Nordfjord

Stryn - Nordfjordeid - Selje – West Cape
Innermost in Nordfjord, the mountains are tall and their summits covered in snow and glaciers. Then the landscape opens up as you drive alongside Lake Hornindalsvatnet to Eid and out towards the coast. Here the West Cape Plateau, the westernmost point on the Norwegian mainland, welcomes you with vertical cliffs and panoramic views of the Stadavet Sea.

Alternative route from Stryn to Eid: The Panorama Road (rv. 613) alongside Nordfjord.

The coastal route

Selje - Vågsøy (start in Måløy)
Drive to Kråkenes Lighthouse, and visit Refviksanden Beach on the way back to the village of Måløy. Drive to Oppedal and visit Vågsberget and the famous Kannesteinen Rock.

Continue to the village of Selje alongside the ocean. Take the boat to Selje Monastery from the tenth century. Experience the West Cape Plateau, the westernmost point on the Norwegian mainland, which welcomes you with vertical cliffs and panoramic views of the Stadhvaet Sea.

Take a bath, surf or walk on the white sandy beaches in Hoddevik and Ervik.

If the weather is really bad you can witness remarkable natural phenomena at both the West Cape and Kråkenes.

The historical route

Sandane – Nordfjordeid - Selje
At Sandane in Gloppen you can visit Nordfjord Folk Museum and learn about how life was for the people of Nordfjord in former times. Take the ferry between Anda and Lote, and continue to Nordfjordeid.

Take a stroll around the centre of Nordfjordeid, and visit Viking burial mounds and the many distinctive old wooden houses. Continue to Selje where you can take a boat out to visit Selje Monastery where you will hear the saga of St. Sunniva.

Experience the glaciers

Briksdalen - Lodalen – Bødalen
In Nordfjord, glistening glaciers straddle narrow valleys. Covering an area of 487 square kilometres, the Jostedalsbreen Glacier is the biggest glacier in mainland Europe. Its most famous offshoots are Briksdalsbreen and Kjenndalsbreen glaciers. You can learn more about the landscape around the glaciers at the Jostedalsbreen National Park Centre.
