Dog sledging in Norway

Let the dogs do the work on the white plains of Northern Norway.

Interest:  Riding & Sledging, Dog sledging

The abrupt coastline stretches itself into flat, enormous plains in the interior of Finnmark.

There are no restrictions as to where you can lead the dogs. The plains are yours and the dogs love to run. They are strong and pull you with lightning speed across the white plains. The plains are endless and the dark sky with thousands of stars is your ceiling. Adrenalin.

You get strong associations to an earlier and simpler life. History is blowing in the wind and whipping your face. A white dessert as long as your eyes can se. Freedom.

There are several suppliers of different kinds of dog sledging tours in Finnmark, for example:

  • BIRK Husky in Kirkenes
  • Engholm Husky in Karasjok
  • Holmen Dog Centre in Alta
  • Northern Lights Husky in Alta

The trips differ in difficulty level. Choose between being a passenger on a one day trip, or steering your own pack of dogs for several days.

Dog sledging tours are also available in other parts of Norway, particularly in the Trysil and Røros regions.

Racing

Sledge dog races are very fun to watch. Each year Norway hosts two world-famous races - Femundløpet,  the world's biggest race starting in the cosy mining town of Røros, and Finnmarksløpet, Europe’s longest and northernmost sledge dog race. Both are World Cup events in the same league as the Iditarod race in Alaska.
