Tips and rules for camp sites in Norway

Tents, caravans and mobile homes are welcome at most Norwegian camp sites.

Interest:  Camping

Caravans and mobile homes

Permitted size of caravans on Norwegian roads:

  • Height: No restrictions
  • Width: 2.55 metres*
  • Total length (car + caravan): 18.75 metres**

* Some secondary roads have a maximum width of less than 2.55 metres. If
your caravan is wider than 2.3 metres and more than 50 centimetres wider than the car, white reflectors must be mounted on the front sides of the mirrors
on the car.
** Drivers of cars and caravans with a combined length of more than 12,40 metres must check from the list of national highways and/or municipal roads whether it is permissible to drive on the intended road or route.

You can obtain more information from the Roads Information Service - phone: 175 (+47 815 48 991 from abroad).

Tents

If you are planning to stay in a tent, it is best to bring your own as very few sites have tents for hire.

Prices

Overnight prices for caravans, mobile homes and tents vary from camp site to camp site within each star rating. Sites rated with two to three stars cost from NOK 80 per accommodation unit per day, those with four to five stars cost from NOK 120 per accommodation unit per day.

Opening times

Opening times are normally from 7 am to 11 pm. The larger camp sites tend to have someone on duty 24 hours a day.

Camping card

The camping card is not obligatory in Norway. However, certain camp sites will be part of a scheme which demands that you must have, or buy, a camping card in order to stay the night. Camping Card Scandinavia (CCS) is the camping card that will be on sale from these companies. If you are a holder of Camping Card International (CCI), this card will be accepted as equivalent to the CCS.
