The Art Nouveau city of Ålesund

A stroll through Ålesund reveals a town full of colourful and beautiful Art Nouveau architecture as well as strong maritime traditions.

Listings:

Following a devastating fire in 1904, the entire town centre burned down to ashes leaving 10,000 people homeless. The rebuilding of the town created one of Europe’s most distinctive concentrations of Art Nouveau buildings.

The whole dramatic story will be told during a guided walk through the town. See the colourful buildings with a myriad of turrets, spires and original medieval ornaments punctuating the skyline. A visit to the Art Nouveau Centre with its special time machine will transport you back to the time of the fire.
