Day 1 – Sightseeing in Bergen
Bryggen Wharf on foot
09.00 - 11.00: Start the day with a guided tour of the old Bryggen Wharf on foot. It takes you on an historical stroll through the medieval wooden buildings of Bryggen, the city's symbol of cultural heritage included on UNESCO's prestigious World Heritage List. Also included is admission to Bryggen's Museum, The Hanseatic Assembly Rooms and the Hanseatic Museum.
Lunch at Mount Fløien
12.00-14.00 Taking the Funicular to the top of Mount Fløien is a great experience and displays a wonderful view of the city. On top of Mount Fløien there are many trails and walkways going into the mountain area or even going down to the city centre. This is where many of Bergen's inhabitants choose to spend their time off.
Fløien is also the home of one of Bergen’s most special restaurants, Fløien Folkerestaurant. Built approximately a century ago, it offers a gourmet meal for VIP guests. After your visit to Mount Fløien it is possible to either take the Funicular back down or enjoy a leisurely stroll.
City sightseeing
14.30-17.30. A three-hour city sightseeing tour that gives an introduction to Bergen and also includes a visit to the Edvard Grieg Museum (Troldhaugen).
Back in the city centre take a tour to see the best art collections in Bergen: The Bergen Art Museum including the Lysverket Collection, Rasmus Meyer's Collection (with it's unique collection of Edvard Munch's paintings), Stenersen's Collection (featuring Paul Klee, Miró and Picasso), the Contemporary Arts Centre and the West Norway Museum of Decorative Art.
20.00 Dinner at one of the city’s many restaurants.
Day 2 – Full day excursion
Fjord tour - Norway in a Nutshell®
Norway in a Nutshell® takes you through some of the most beautiful scenery in Norway's fjords. You can experience the breathtaking Flåm Railway, the Aurlandsfjord, the narrow Nærøyfjord and the steep Stalheimskleiva.
The Bergen Railway Line
The Bergen Railway is a unique experience on Northern Europe’s highest railway. It is exposed to deep, low-pressure centres from the west, which can mean strong winds and heavy snow for part of the year. To be able to keep the railway open demands great effort and technical knowledge.
Today skilled workers, effective equipment, tunnels and snow tunnels make the Bergen Railway one of the safest and most comfortable ways of travelling between Oslo and Bergen. The line was recognised to be one of the 20 best railway experiences in the world in 1999.
The Flåm Railway
The journey on the Flåm Railway is regarded as one of the highlights of the Norway in a Nutshell® round trip. The 20-kilometre train journey starts from the mountain station of Myrdal and travels to Flåm deep down in the fjord, taking around 55 minutes.
On the journey you will have views of some of the most magnificent mountain scenery in Norway, with an ever-changing panorama of mountains and thundering waterfalls. Along the Flåm Railway the train moves slowly and stops by the best views.
Splendid fjords
Down in idyllic Flåm there is time to eat and wander around a little before continuing your journey by boat from the Aurlandsfjord and into the Nærøyfjord, the narrowest fjord in Europe. Surrounded by mighty mountains up to 1,800 metres high, this branch of the Sognefjord is amazingly beautiful.
On the journey you will see many small, traditional farms. If you are lucky you might also catch sight of the goats that graze along the edge of the fjord, or of the seals lying on rocks, before the boat moors at Gudvangen.
Stalheimskleiva
Now the coach journey continues up the steep and spectacular hairpin bends of Stalheimskleiva. The road up to Stalheim Hotel has 13 steep turns. After enjoying the wonderful views of the Stalheimsfossen and Sivlefossen waterfalls, there is a short stop at the hotel to enjoy the views before the journey continues to Voss. From Voss you can continue your journey by train to Bergen or Oslo.
