The day starts by driving to the southern tip on the island of Karmøy, to the small town of Skudeneshavn. The old town consists of 150-year-old white wooden houses, lining narrow streets. The town was the main centre between Stavanger and Bergen during the time of the sail ships.
This history is displayed at the city museum, Mælandsgården. After a guided tour in the museum you will head out for a guided tour of the old town, which ends in a small and beautiful park with an extraordinary view of the North Sea and the town from above. Lunch is then served at the cosy and intimate restaurant Bestastuå.
After lunch you will head back towards Avaldsnes. This region is where the Viking Harald Fairhair settled after winning the battle of Hafrsfjord and gathered Norway into one kingdom. On the way you will stop for a short walk on one of the beautiful beaches as you pass on your way north.
You start your visit at the Nordvegen History Centre. This is a modern museum that tells the story of the kings and princes who have lived at and ruled from Avaldsnes.
After the history centre there will be a guided tour of St. Olav’s Church. The church was built in 1250 and is next to the history centre. Following the visit to the church you will walk down towards the island of Bukkøy and the reconstructed Viking village Vikinggarden.
Here you can dress, eat and act as they did more than a thousand years ago. After dinner you will head back to Haugesund.
