Description

About 20 km west of Bismo towards Sota Sæter you find the bridge Pålebrua. This is an utleggsbru, meaning that it was constructed from the one side towards the other.
The material used was common in this district, but today this is the only bridge of its kind left in Skjåk.

The age of the bridge is not known, but there is reason to believe that it was built towards the end of the 18th century of sometime in the beginning of the 19th. Many people wonder why the bridge is so wide an so solidly constructed, considering that there is no common road connected with it. Maybe we will have to go on wondering…. On the north side of the bridge there used to be a mill, which was in use until the beginning of the 19th century. In there lived “Pålen”, a living narrator of lore who might probably have been able to tell us the age of the brigde. The name of the bridge originates from him, but the bridge is clearly much older than “Pålen”.
