Description

Norway's postal & philatelic museum.
The mail will get through:
Which one of us has never rushed to the letter box in the hope of finding a letter or postcard from a friend? When one is waiting for you, it is a real pleasure. Often, not much thought is given to the people who make sure the letters arrive. The museum provides an insight into over 360 years of postal history. Through tableaux, pictures, text and film, you can follow the development of the postal service from the days when each letter was sent by messenger and right up to today's electronic communication via e-mail and SMS.
1854 saw the opening of Norway's first railway line, which ran from Christiania to Eidsvoll. Right from the start it was decided that the trains should carry mail.
Eventually, the trains had special postal carriages and this allowed for the mail to be sorted en route.
The “Mail on Rail” exhibition provides an insight into the postal services on board the train. A letter will not get far without a stamp, and in the main building at Maihaugen visitors can see every stamp issue from 1855 to the present day.
