Cross-country skiing in Røros

Easily accessible and blessed with very stable snow conditions, Røros offers a choice of skiing and winter activities for almost any type of weather.

At the heart of Røros is Europe’s oldest preserved timber town, which appears on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites. Destination Røros also boasts a pulsating cultural life, wild and unspoilt nature, two national parks, a dramatic history and superb local food.

The skiing isn’t bad either. Here you will find open mountain plateaux and forest-clad valleys. The Røros plateau is situated 600-800 metres above sea level, with summits as high as 1,600 metres, and represents an agreeable challenge to most people.

When

The season lasts from December to May.

Terrain

More than 500 kilometres of prepared trails covering the whole region, with varied terrain ranging from forests to high mountains.

Ski after dark

Eight kilometres of tracks are floodlit, divided on two trails – both connected to the centre of Røros. The tracks are floodlit until 9 pm every day in season. 

Off-piste skiing

Ålen Ski Centre, located 30 minutes outside Røros, offers off-piste skiing.

Accessibility

120 kilometres of tracks are directly connected to the town of Røros.

Ski hire

Røros Sport (tel: +47 72 41 12 18) and Røros Hotell (tel: +47 72 40 80 00) both rent out cross-country gear. Prices are 150 NOK per day/275 NOK weekend/600 NOK per week, and include both skis, poles and shoes.

Accommodation

The region’s largest hotel, Røros Hotell, has several trails starting right on its doorstep. Vauldalen Fjellhotell, enjoys a great location by the Swedish border, in a snow-filled area on the Røros plateau surrounded by beautiful mountains, 840 metres above sea level. Destination Røros has cabins surrounded by cross-country trails in many locations throughout the region.

Other accommodation options include Bergstaden Hotel, Vertshuset Røros, Erzscheidergården Hotel, Idrettsparken Hotel and Fjellheimen.

You will find a map of the cross-country tracks in Røros. Want to try something other than cross-country skiing for the day? Hummelfjell Alpine Centre and Ålen Ski Centre are located 15 minutes and half an hour by car respectively from Røros.
