Tour suggestions
Here are three recommended hikes in the Geilo area:
1. Geilo - Prestholtskarvet
- Geilo – Prestholtskarvet (1,859 metres above sea level)
- Duration: Approximately 4 hours each way
- Distance: 8 kilometres from Geilotoppen to Prestholtseter + ascent
Start in Geilo and hike up to Geilotoppen (1,078 metres above sea level). From here a signposted path leads west through easy terrain, past Gullsteinhovda and Urrundberget. The last kilometres follow the road to Prestholt.
Prestholt café is open in July and August and on weekends throughout autumn. A stop is recommended here before the real ascent starts. There is a 600-metre altitude difference between Prestholt and the top of Prestholtskarvet, a hike that usually takes about 1.5 hours. The route is weather-dependent, and should only be tackled in clear weather. It is possible to travel by car to Prestholtseter (toll road.)
2. Geilo - Ustetind
- Geilo (Tuftebrua) – Ustetind (1,376 metres above sea level)
- Duration: Approximately 3.5 hours each way
- Distance: 10 kilometres
Family-friendly hike on the Hardangervidda.
Ustetind lies in the northeast of Hardangervidda, and provides a fantastic view southwards over the mountain plateau. On clear days you can see Gaustatoppen Mountain far to the south, and Hallingskarvet to the north.
The hike from Geilo takes about 3.5 hours, but Ustetind can also be reached from Ustaoset or the private tourist cabin Tuva. The ascent from Ustaoset takes well over 2 hours, the descent about 1.5 hours. The ascent from Tuva takes about 1.5 hours, the descent about 1 hour. The hike is suitable for most children with previous hiking experience.
The path starts at Tuftebrua, in the far west of Ustedalsfjorden. The bridge Tuftebrua is an unusual log construction. From here on, the path ascends steeply up the birch-clad hillside. Above the tree line you will be rewarded for your effort - there is a fantastic view over Ustedalen and Geilo.
The path runs southwest through open, easy terrain. A steady ascent starts before Lake Tindevatnet (1,264 metres above sea level). When the lake is behind you a new, shorter ascent awaits before you reach the top. Remember to bring food and drink, as the café at Ustetind is no longer open.
3. Children's route
Go on a family search for the forest nymph Huldra. This hike is one of many activities in "Eventyrferden". Perhaps we will find Huldra in the cave? This is an exciting guided hike for people of all ages. Meeting point: Tourist office in Geilo centre. The trip starts at 10 am and finishes at 1 pm. Tel: +47 97 54 18 60 for more information.
