The inland fishing region of Gjøvik, Land and Toten, located 90 kilometres north of Oslo, is a paradise for anglers. Here you will find the giant Mjøsa trout and pikes over a metre long. In addition to Mjøsa and Randsfjorden, there are also Lake Einavatnet, the rivers Lenaelven and Hunnselven as well as numerous small and large lakes, rivers and streams.
Fishing is permitted from 1 May until 1 September, except in Randsfjorden where you can fish year round. Fishing is restricted in most waterways after 1 September, although there are a few local variations. Whether or not ice fishing is possible depends on waterways being frozen – you will need a permit for this too.
There are 20 different fish species in Lake Mjøsa alone - and Lake Mjøsa is just one of many alternatives. Trolling for large trout is a wonderful experience. Spin and jerk bait fishing are good for catching pike and perch. Or how about trying modern worm bait fishing for carp? Spin and fly fishing are excellent methods in the rivers that flow into Lake Mjøsa. You can hook burbot, grayling, bream and whitefish.
In the spring of 2011 a pike weighing 18.6 kg was caught in Lake Mjøsa. The largest trout ever hooked in the area weighed in at 15.3 kg – it was also caught in Lake Mjøsa, in the 1980s.
The large and spacious fishing areas and good quality fish and water make the region ideal for small groups, families, as well as solitary fishermen looking for peace and quiet.
