Fly-fishing holiday in Hemsedal

Hemsedal is a well known fly-fishing destination, located in the mountains midway between Oslo and Bergen, and a one-hour drive from the Sognefjord.

Hemsedal offers two of Norway’s best trout rivers, Hemsila and Grøndøla. In Hemsila you can expect to catch trout of 500 grams to two kilos. Summer in Hemsedal is an angler's paradise, with long, fast-flowing rivers and numerous mountain lakes. The rivers and lakes are crystal clear and hold wild brown trout in their prime.

Fish species

The most common fish species caught in Hemsedal are perch and trout.

All-time record

In the summer of 2008 a record trout of almost 7 kg was caught in the Mørkedøla River, which runs into Hemsila.

Target groups

Hemsedal suits both fly-fishing professional anglers and beginners, who can take advantage of the various fly-fishing courses on offer.

Accommodation

Hemsedal offers accommodation from Ulsåk in the south to Grøndalen in the west. You will find everything from modern hotels and luxury cabins, to basic cottages and apartments.

Most units have dynamic pricing varying through the season. This means that the prices are adjusted according to demand and availability. Visit hemsedal.com for prices, pictures of the units, and useful information like number of bedrooms, beds and other facilities.

A number of package deals are available. A weekly package at NOK 6,900 per person includes seven nights, 20 hours of fly-fishing guiding and one dinner at the farm. A three-day package at NOK 4,900 includes three nights stay and 14 hours of guiding. Fishing permits are not included in the rates.

Rules and regulations

Hemsedal has a fishing permit valid for four rivers and 18 mountain lakes. Detailed information about prices and conditions can be found online.

Fly-fishing course

Hemsedal has a very active fly-fishing club, and some of Norway's best fly-fishers come from Hemsedal. One of them, Tor Grøthe, offers fly-fishing courses, which also include accommodation in a high standard self-catering cabin at Grøthe Farm. Getting there

Hemsedal is 220 kilometres from Oslo, 290 kilometres from Larvik and 273 kilometres from Bergen. You can also get the train from Bergen or Oslo to nearby Gol and continue onto Hemsedal by local bus or taxi. Sogn og Fjordane Ekspressen and Hallingbussen  are express buses between Oslo and Hemsedal.
