Tour suggestions in Horten

The countryside around Horten provides great opportunities for both short and long hikes on foot and by bike.

The Coastal Route

The Coastal Route in Horten and Vestfold passes through lightly undulating terrain and is ideal for those who want to take the children on an exciting bicycle ride. Pleasant small towns, a variety of cultural activities and beautiful cultivated landscape characterise this stretch of the Norwegian coast.

Cycling

Round trip on Karljohansvern, starting from the Naval Museum (4 kilometres, 30 minutes):
Karljohansvern served as a naval base from 1818 to 1962 and much of it has been preserved in its original form. This round trip will take you through many interesting places such as former naval buildings, the old part of Horten, restored canon batteries as well as beautiful swimming sites. From Horten to Åsgårdstrand (10 kilometres, 40 minutes):
This marked cycle path follows the coast and offers superb scenery. After about two kilometres you will reach Borre Park, which is a perfect place to take a break and enjoy the surroundings.

From Horten to Holmestrand (19 kilometres, 1,5 hours):
This is a part of the Coastal Route (see above) which leads to the town of Holmestrand with its steep mountain walls.

From Horten to Eidsfoss (41 kilometres, 3,5 hours):
This cycle route covers a small part of Vestfold and offers a good overview of the scenery to be found in the county.

Walking

Here are a few suggestions for walks in and around Horten:

From Horten to Åsgårdstrand (9 kilometres, 1,5 hours):
This trail is part of the Coastal Route. Easy terrain.

Borre Lake – the golf path (5.7 kilometres, 1 hour 15 minutes):
A beautiful path along the Borre Lake, around the golf course and through the forest. There are boards along the trail with information about flora and fauna.

Round trip on Karljohansvern (about 4 kilometres, 1 hour):
An historical trail in the old part of Horten where you can see many old buildings and restored canon batteries from the 1870s. On Karljohansvern you can also visit The Naval Museum, Preus Museum and Local Historical Centre in addition to several art galleries and workshops.

Horten town walk (10 kilometres, 2 hours):
This walk takes you to Karljohansvern, along Horten inner harbour, through urban parts of Horten and on to a raised spot offering great views of the town.
