Hiking in the Lillehammer Region

From the Peer Gynt path to the Pilgrim’s Route, the Lillehammer Region and Gudbrandsdalen Valley offer a myriad of hiking options in Eastern Norway.

The Lillehammer Region has vast mountain plains with a comprehensive network of paths and roads. The region is divided in two by the Gudbrandsdalen Valley, which winds north from Lillehammer towards the National Parks of Rondane and Jotunheimen.

The Lillehammer Region offers an unlimited number of possibilities if you like to be active outdoors. The region is a perfect starting point whether you wish to stay in one place or walk from cabin to cabin or hotel to hotel. The landscape is varied, and consists of anything from forests to mountain plains. In this unique environment you will feel relaxed and at peace immediately.

Walking along the Peer Gynt path

Ibsen's Peer Gynt was based on a real life person who used to live in the Sødorpbygda near Vinstra. The 70 kilometre-long Peer Gynt path passes through the varied mountain terrain on the west side of the Gudbrandsdalen Valley. It is well marked.

En route there are several hotels and mountain lodges where you can eat or stay the night. For organised walks along the Peer Gynt path, contact Norske Bygdeopplevelser in Lillehammer. Skeikampen, a destination in the Lillehammer Region, is a great starting point for hikes along the Peer Gynt path, as well as for other day trips.

The Pilgrims' Route – The Olav's Route to Trondheim

The Pilgrims' Route through the Gudbrandsdalen Valley starts in Lillehammer and passes through a landscape rich in culture and history. There are several attractions along the way and the landscape, flora and fauna will enrich the walk. The Gudbrandsdalen Valley is full of history and in several places you will see signs of the old medieval road. A Pilgrimage Centre is located in the Gudbrandsdalen Valley where staff can help answer questions and plan walks.

Hiking in Venabu

Venabu Fjellhotell is located on the east side of the Gudbrandsdalen Valley and is a good starting point for several hikes. Venabu, south of Rondane National Park, offers terrain that has peaceful, gentle mountains, and plains formed more than 60 million years ago. You will find interesting formations here: narrow canyons, lakes and waterfalls. Explore independently or with the hotel's local guide. Experience the light summer nights, walk across plateaus with wild reindeer, visit the mountain farms and discover the rich culture of the Gudbrandsdalen Valley, such as the Peer Gynt Festival in August.
