Winter in Nesbyen

Nesbyen is a complete winter sport destination with an alpine ski centre, kilometres of cross-country tracks and good possibilities for snowkiting.

Alpine skiing and snowboarding

Nesbyen Alpine Centre is located in the sunny Natten area, 13 kilometres from Nesbyen town centre. There are 5 lifts and 13 slopes, and one of Norway's longest snow parks. The centre is known for its good children's areas, well screened from the rest of the ski centre.

From the peak station you have a great view over the famous mountains Hallingskarvet, Reineskarvet and Jotunheimen. At the bottom of the ski centre you will find Skistua, a modern service centre, where you can buy food and drinks.

For the children

The children are in focus at Nesbyen Alpine Centre. There is a separate children's area with two lifts that are shielded in relation to the rest of the slopes. Own course and wave shape trail are also exciting attractions well suited to learn the smallest balance and ski technique.

At the bottom of the children's area, there is an extended area where parents can accompany their children whilst skiing.

Ski passes

The touch-free ticketing at Nesbyen Alpine Centre makes key-card compulsory for all types of cards. If you do not have a key-card, you can buy one for NOK 75,-.

Cross-country skiing

Nesbyen offers 225 kilometres of well- prepared cross-country tracks.
From Nystølen in Trondrudmarka you can follow the trails over Nes Mountains. Here you can choose between easy round trips or set out on something tougher towards Åkrefjell and Hallingnatten.

In the Myking area you will find ski trails in gently forest and high mountain terrain.

From the tops of Dyna and Såtenatten you can see the majestic mountains Hallingskarvet and Jotunheimen.

Kiting and sailing

The mountains of Nesbyen offer great opportunities for those who want to sail on skis with ski sails or kites. Both Buvann by Buvassbrenna and Myking by Fagerhøy Lodge are great places to get started for beginners.

Fagerhøy
Drive through Rukkedalen from Nesbyen to Rukke. Turn right towards Myking. Great plateaus for ski sailing close to Fagerhøy Lodge.

Buvann
Drive the same road through Rukkedalen from Nesbyen, passing Rukke up to Buvassbrenna. Parking at Buvann. Great training grounds on the frozen lake for both ski sailing and kiting. The wind conditions are at their best when the wind blows from the east or west.

Sailing tours in Nesfjella
The southern part of Nesfjella is ideal for those who want to sail in the mountains. Drive through Rukkedalen towards Nesbyen Alpine Centre and turn right towards Nystølen. Follow the yellow ski track from Nystølen to Øyvann (about 45 minutes). By Øyvann, you have arrived at a high mountain plateau that goes on for kilometres to the south towards Norefjell. This high mountains area is ideal for exciting sailing tours.

Visit Hallingdal Museum
Hallingdal Museum from 1899 is among the oldest open air museums in Norway. There are 29 buildings and 30,000 objects representing the entire region on the museum’s premises.

The Staveloft from Ål was build around 1330 and is today one of the country’s best preserved wooden buildings from the medieval period. The history of emigration is represented by the Skratte farm house from North Dakota. A Hallingdal native who emigrated built the house in 1892. In 1998, it was brought to Nesbyen.

There is a permanent exhibition showing the nature and culture of Hallingdal. In addition there are changing summer exhibitions. On activity days, there are demonstrations of old traditional crafts.

A visit to the museum should be combined with a pleasant walk through Old Nes, the old town.
