Mountain biking in Telemark

The Hardangervidda Mountain Plateau offers several tracks and tours for a proper mountain biking holiday.

The Hardangervidda – Norway´s largest national park – is considered to be one of the most beautiful cycling routes in Norway. The Krossobanen Cable Car whisks you up from Rjukan to the starting point 883 metres higher up. Here you have a fabulous view over Gaustatoppen to the south, Telemark's highest mountain and often referred to as Norway’s most beautiful peak.

If you are lucky, you will see wild reindeer and grouse as you go north across the Hardangervidda. You will also find many good fishing lakes where you can catch trout. The route is well signposted and maintained. After 30 kilometres you arrive at the cosy Kalhovd Tourist Cabin for dinner and a well-deserved rest.

Tour suggestions

If you are looking for a special mountain challenge, check out the uphill Tidal road from Dal, just east of Rjukan up to Gaustakne - a tour with an elevation of one thousand metres. At Stavsroi, close to the road’s highest point, consider hiking along the marked trail to the top of Gaustatoppen. On a clear day, this is one of the best viewpoints in the whole of Norway.

The climb from Dal to the top of Gaustatoppen is part of the last running leg of the Norseman X-treme Triathlon, said to be the hardest triathlons in the world with a winning time of about 11,5 hours.
