Situated a 30-minute drive from Rødberg, you will find Langedrag Nature Park. It is a family-run attraction where people can experience native Norwegian animals up close. Here you can see elks, reindeer, lynx and wolves up close, as well as goats, cows, horses and other farm animals. Open all year around, accommodation available at weekends and in school holidays.
Hardangervidda is Europe's largest mountain plateau, and one of Norway's best known national parks. It is very popular for outdoor activities such as hiking and fishing, and within easy reach from Numedal. There are hiking trails from Imingfjell, Dagalifjell and Jønndalen. One of the best known is Nordmannsslepa, the old trading route between west and east. Statsallmenningen (government-owned common grounds) is great for fishing, and there are several mountain lodges on or near Hardangervidda if you want to stay the night.
Trillemarka-Rollagsfjell nature reserve consists mainly of old natural forest that has been little affected by humans in modern time. Here you can experience a "fairy" forest with large variation in vegetation and species, as well as the cultural heritage of old summer farms which shows how generations have used the land. Trillemarka-Rollagsfjell is great for outdoor activities in virtually untouched nature. Look for blackcock and capercaillies in spring, explore the old mountain trails in summer and autumn or try your luck fishing in one of the many lakes. Winter landscape can best be experienced on cross-country skis in the many tracks that criss-cross the area.
Numedal has three open air museums: Nore og Uvdal Bygdetun in Udval, Rollag Bygdetun in Rollag, and Dåsettunet, five kilometres from Flesberg. Nore og Uvdal Bygdetun is home to Uvdal Stave Church and to a collection of traditional buildings, all open to the public between June and August. Rollag bygdetun also boasts its own stave church, as well as Rollag Rectory. There are 13 buildings in the museum, most built in the typical style of the area. The museum also houses a collection of more than 1,000 local objects and artefacts. Dåsettunet is one of the oldest farms in the area. It is unique in that 20 of the 23 buildings on site are preserved in their original environment. Throughout the summer this museum offers activities, exhibitions and concerts for both children and adults.
Travelling through Numedal you can visit four of the famous Norwegian stave churches. These are located in Uvdal, Nore, Rollag and Flesberg. Dating back to approximately 1150-1200, these four churches are famous for their interior decorations. Church services and weddings are still held in the churches in summer, and there are also popular concert venues.
