Cross-country skiing in Valdres

Valdres is one of Norway’s most attractive and varied winter areas. It is the perfect choice for families, popular for its wide variety of activities.

Cross-country skiing in Valdres centres around three areas: Nythun Mountain Lodge (Kruk), Gomobu Mountain Lodge (Vaset) and Grønolen Mountain Lodge (Beito), where you will find three unique networks of beautifully prepared cross-country skiing tracks, three traditional mountain lodges with attentive personal service, and three family-run businesses with good food. Stable, snow-rich winters and long periods of cool and clear weather make Valdres one of the most popular Norwegian winter destinations.

When

The season in Valdres normally lasts from November to April, but it is still possible to go cross-country skiing among Jotunheimen's graceful peaks in May.

Terrain

More than 1,000 kilometres of machine-prepared trails leading across the mountains and through the majestic forests are just waiting to be enjoyed.

Ski after dark

There are several places to go cross-country skiing after nightfall. The longest trail is close to Fagernes Airport in Leirin. Lights go off at 10 pm.

Off-piste skiing

Valdres offers endless opportunities for exploring the pleasures of Norway's undisturbed winter landscape. Tyin Active (phone: +47) 90 59 70 64 offer safe guided tours to some of the area’s best spots. In the Beitostølen area Beito Active (phone: +47 61 34 13 60)  offer off-piste excursions in Raudalen. Activities are weather dependent.

Accessibility:

Tracks start in the Beitostølen and Tyin area. Lifts can be found in the alpine skiing centres.

Ski hire

The ski centres offer rental for alpine, cross-country and snowboard.

Accommodation

Options include Nythun Høyfjellstue, Grønolen Fjellgard, Gomobu Fjellstue and Herangtunet Boutique Hotell.

Additional information

There are seven alpine centres in Valdres, with slopes suitable for both beginners and the more advance skiers and snowboarders. All the alpine areas have a restaurant/cafeteria, ski lessons and ski rental. Many of them also have separate lifts, slopes and play areas for children.
