Hiking in the area of the Geirangerfjord and Trollstigen

Experience a hiking holiday in some of the most spectacular scenery of Fjord Norway - in the surroundings of the famous Geirangerfjord.

The fjord landscape offers both easier and tougher walks. Most paths are well marked, and there are updated hiking maps for sale. The bonus of walking in this area are the magnificent views – hardly to be experienced anywhere else in the world.

In the Tafjord Mountains you may walk for days, and stay overnight in the cabins of the Norwegian Trekking Association. It is also possible to camp in the mountains.

Hiking season

The best season for hiking is May - October.

Tour suggestions

There are excellent possibilities for short hikes in the area.

Storseterfossen Waterfall
A one-hour walk takes you to Storseterfossen Waterfall, where you can stand behind the waterfall.

A three to four-hour walk takes you to one of the famous mountain farms surrounding the Geirangerfjord. And in five to seven hours, you may reach one of the many summits in the area, offering the most stunning views.

The Patchell Cabin in the Sunnmøre Alps
This walk takes you in to the Sunnmøre Alps, with snowcapped peaks, glaciers and a fantastic scenery. The family-friendly and moderate walk to the Patchell Cabin (818 metres above sea level) takes about five hours, and suits normally fit individuals.

Guided tours are available, but the paths are well-marked and there are hiking maps for sale at the tourist information.

The mountain farm of Skageflå
This walk to the abandoned mountain farm of Skageflå (300 metres above sea level), situated over the famous Geirangerfjord, is a striking cultural as well as nature experience. It is hard to imagine how people could live under such hard conditions.

You can either walk the distance from Geiranger (approximately three hours one way), or you can join the sightseeing boats from Geiranger to the foot of the mountain where there is a path leading up. You can hike back or choose to be picked up by the sightseeing boat. Walking from/back to Geiranger, you will have to go up to 550 metres above sea level.

Guided tours are available, but the paths are well-marked and there are hiking maps for sale at the tourist information.
