Hiking in the Hardangerfjord and in Voss

Few places offer as many varied hiking options as the Hardangerfjord and Voss. Fjords, mountains, glaciers and waterfalls are waiting to be explored.

The Hardangerfjord and Voss are located in the heart of Fjord Norway. Only about an hour by car from Bergen, they are two of the most accessible hiking areas in Norway. Enjoy the stunning scenery with fjords and roaring waterfalls, or discover a different world by joining a guided glacier hike.

In addition to being a hiking heaven, the region offers plenty of outdoor adventure activities like rafting, cycling, sea kayaking, via ferrata climbing, parachuting and paragliding.

When

The hiking season lasts from May to October. Please note that there may be snow in the mountain areas until the end of June.

Hiking possibilities

Some of the most amazing hikes in Norway are in the Hardangerfjord region. People from all over the world come to see Trolltunga, one of the most spectacular cliffs in Norway. It is a challenging hike in the high mountains and takes 8-10 hours in total. The season for hiking is normally mid June to mid September.

HM Queen Sonja's panoramic hiking trail between Kinsarvik and Lofthus is one of Her Majesty's favourite hikes in the area. It is a challenging full day hike that offers some majestic panoramic views.

The four waterfalls trail in Husedalen valley from Kinsarvik towards Hardangervidda is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful hikes in Norway. Even a short two hours hike offers impressive views, to see all the waterfalls takes 5-6 hours.

The largest national park in Norway is Hardangervidda National Park. This vast mountain plateau offers excellent hiking opportunities for both seasoned hikers and recreational hikers.

The hike in Odda through the lush Buerdalen valley towards the Buer glacier is also a great experience.

Folgefonna glacier is a part of Folgefonna National Park. You can join Folgefonni Glacier Team on guided blue ice hikes from the summer ski centre in Jondal from mid June to September.

Voss is a great starting point for hikes, with a range of short and long trails of different categories. Voss Resort  and Voss Fjellandsby in Myrkdalen have a network of family-friendly hiking tracks. Maps and information are available at the Voss Tourist Information Office.

Top hikes

Enjoy the spectacular view from the famous cliff Trolltunga (The Troll's Tongue Rock) or Bakkanosi.

Go on a magic waterfall walk to Husedalen, Stalheimsfossen or Bordalsgjelet.

You also have the opportunity to experience Norway's third largest glacier, on a blue ice trip on the Folgefonna Glacier.

Accommodation

There is accommodation available for all budgets, and all places have hiking trails on their doorstep.

In the Stølsheimen sanctuary around Voss and in Hardangervidda National Park, the hiking trails are connected by mountain cabins run by the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT). This is perfect for tailor-made hiking round trips or longer hikes into the wilderness.

How to get there

Hardanger is one hour from Bergen by car. To Voss the journey takes around one hour and 20 minutes. Driving from Oslo takes about five hours to Hardanger and seven hours to Voss.

There are trains to Voss from Bergen and Oslo. There are also good bus connections between Bergen, Voss and Hardanger as well as long distance coaches from Oslo, Kristiansand, Haugesund and other cities.
