Getting to Helgeland and around

By car

The E6 motorway runs the length of Helgeland and is the most direct route to the interior. An alternative to the E6 is the Coastal Route (Kystriksveien) (fv. 17, formerly known as rv. 17), which stretches from Steinkjer to Bodø. You can also reach the Helgeland Coast via Tosenvegen (fv. 76), via Mosjøen (fv. 78) or via Mo i Rana (E12). There are three main roads leading to Helgeland from Sweden: Sagavegen (fv. 804/fv. 296), Krutfjellvegen (rv. 73) and Blåvegen (E12).

• From Oslo to Mosjøen or Brønnøysund: Approximately 870 kilometres (13 hours)
• From Oslo to Sandnessjøen or Mo i Rana: Approximately 970 kilometres (14,5 hours)
• From Trondheim to Mosjøen: Approximately 392 kilometres (5 hours)
• From Trondheim to Sandnessjøen or Mo i Rana: Approximately 460 kilometres (6,5 hours)
• From Trondheim to Brønnøysund via the scenic Kystriksveien fv.17: Approximately 374 kilometres (6 hours)
• From Trondheim to Sandnessjøen via the scenic Kystriksveien fv. 17: Approximately 430 kilometres (8,5 hours)

By air

Widerøe operates direct flights to/from Bodø and Trondheim to Brønnøysund, Sandnessjøen, Mosjøen and Mo i Rana. In addition there is also a direct route between Oslo and Brønnøysund (and a direct route between Oslo and Sandnessjøen in summer only). Approximate travel time:

• From Bergen to Mosjøen or Brønnøysund: 3 hours
• From Bergen to Sandnessjøen or Mo i Rana: 4 hours
• From Oslo to Brønnøysund: 1,5 hours
• From Oslo to Sandnessjøen: 1 hour 45 minutes
• From Oslo to Mo i Rana: 2,5 hours
• From Oslo to Mosjøen: 3 hours
• From Trondheim to Mosjøen, Brønnøysund or Sandnessjøen: 45 minutes
• From Trondheim to Mo i Rana: 1 hour

By train

The Nordland Line runs several times daily from Trondheim to Bodø. Approximate travel time:

• From Oslo to Mosjøen: 12 hours
• From Oslo to Mo i Rana: 14,5 hours 
• From Trondheim to Mosjøen: 5 hours
• From Trondheim to Mo i Rana: 6,5 hours
• From Bodø to Mo i Rana: 3 hours
• From Bodø to Mosjøen: 4 hours

By Hurtigruten (The Norwegian Coastal Voyage)

Many people describe Hurtigruten as "the world's most beautiful voyage". It calls twice daily at Brønnøysund, Sandnessjøen and Nesna. See their website for timetables and prices.  

By local buses and ferries

There are daily bus connections between the coast and the interior, and regular ferry and speedboats connections from Brønnøysund, Sandnessjøen, Nesna and Stokkvågen. Call 177 (within Norway) or +47 75 77 24 10 (from abroad) for information and timetables.

Buses run twice daily between Mo i Rana and Umeå in Sweden. Contact Länstrafiken  for information and timetables.
