Kirkenes is the main gateway by air, while Widerøe's planes reach all coastal communities.
Long-distance bus routes terminate in Eastern Finnmark. Departures are not frequent, so you need to plan. You can also reach Murmansk and Finland by bus. From Western Finnmark and Tromsø:
The Finnish bus company Eskelisen Lapin Linjat operates a range of buses between Rovaniemi and Northern Norway.
The Hurtigruten calls at Kjøllefjord, Mehamn, Berlevåg, Båtsfjord, Vardø and Vadsø on its way to Kirkenes, calling at all ports on the return leg except Vadsø. For independent travellers, Hurtigruten can be a smart way to travel.
Eastern Finnmark's roads maintain a high standard. The mountain passes to the fishing villages on the coast are prone to winter closure. This occurs much less frequently in the interior and where the road follows the coast.
