Getting to the land of the Sami

Fly into Alta or Lakselv and travel by bus or car around the inner parts of Finnmark.

By air

There are no airports in the area. The nearest airports are:

  • Alta (ALF): Direct connections with Oslo with SAS and Norwegian. Alta Airport is a 2.5-hour drive from Kautokeino. 
  • Lakselv (LKL): Served by Widerøe. Flights from Alta and Tromsø
  • Enontekiö (ENF)/Kittilä (KTT)/Ivalo (IVL): Useful airports in Finland for connections to Europe and Asia via Finnair's network:
    Enontekiö – Kautokeino: 88 kilometres (55 miles)/1.5 hourso
    Kittilä – Kautokeino: 230 kilometres (143 miles)/3 hourso
    Ivalo – Karasjok: 165 kilometres (103 miles)/2.5 hours

By bus

There are only a few buses between places on the Finnmark plain, and all bus transportation must be planned carefully. Boreal Transport has information on bus routes in Finnmark.

  • Alta – Kautokeino: 9 departures per week/2 hours 15 minutes
  • Alta – Karasjok (via Lakselv): 2 departures daily except Saturdays/5 hours
  • Kautokeino – Karasjok: 4 departures per week/2 hours
  • Karasjok – Kirkenes: 4 departures per week/6 hours
  • Karasjok – Rovaniemi (Finland): daily/7 hours

By car

The few roads between places on the Finnmark plain are of a good standard and pose few problems. During the coldest periods in winter, you may experience problems starting your car.

  • Alta – Kautokeino: 131 kilometres (81 miles)/2 hours
  • Kautokeino – Karasjok: 129 kilometres (80 miles)/2 hours
  • Karasjok – The North Cape: 265 kilometres (165 miles)/3.5 hours
  • KarasjokKirkenes: 321 kilometres (199 miles)/5 hours (265 kilometres (165 miles)/4 hours via Finland)
