- I feel small doing this. Small on a big sea with almost thousand metres high mountains right next to me, says Spinx, with a somewhat nervous smile on his face.
Spinx is near the fishing village of Henningsvær, getting kayak lessons and instructions before heading out on the open sea. It doesn't take long before Spinx chooses the easiest way to do this: a double kayak with a more experienced person on board. If you have tried this before, or if you have a feel for it, you can get a single kayak and get to paddle more freely.
Kayaking is a popular activity in the Lofoten Islands, and there are many operators letting out kayaks and offering lessons and guided tours.
You get to paddle by houses where people still live, and by abandoned fishermen's cabins. And it's not unusual to spot sea eagles.
Fishing has been, and still is, to a degree, the reason why people have lived here. The Lofoten Islands are where fishermen came from all over Norway for the winter cod fishing. And many still do. Spinx meets up with a local fisherman out at sea, and is invited onboard the big fishing vessel. He is told stories about the Lofoten fisheries; what it meant, and what it means today. And then, finally, he gets to try fishing himself.
There is a big variety of operators offering different kinds of fishing tours in the Lofoten Islands.
