Fishing in the land of the midnight sun

Northern Norway has the best deep-sea fishing in the country. Try fishing at the North Cape, and stay in a fishermen's cabin or at a camp site.

About the fishing in Northern Norway

There is excellent deep sea fishing along the entire coast of Northern Norway. You will also find good salmon rivers. In addition there are thousands of lakes, mainly with trout and char, but also grayling, pike and perch.

What kind of fish to catch

The most common species are cod, halibut, saithe and catfish. In addition there are salmon in the rivers and over 60.000 lakes, mainly with trout and char, but also grayling, pike and perch.

Season for fishing

It is easier to catch fish in winter, especially when the Norwegian Arctic cod migrates down the coast to spawn in January to April. Short winter days, however, make most fish enthusiasts prefer the period March to October.

Fishermen usually prefer the summer season, when you can make use of midnight sun. The salmon migrate in July. Autumn is excellent for fishing in lakes. Warm clothes and patience are required for ice fishing in winter.

Accommodation facilities

You can choose between different forms for accommodation in Northern Norway: rorbu and fishermen huts, hotels, cottages, summerhouses and camping.

License for fishing in rivers and lakes

For fishing in salmon rivers, all persons over the age of 16 must purchase a fishing license costing NOK 220, and a fishing permit for each individual river. Fishing license is required for inland fishing. Angling for saltwater fish is free, but you are not allowed to bring more than 15 kilos of filet out of the country.
