The Setesdal Valley is known for its rich cultural heritage. This is the "Kingdom of silversmiths" in Norway, so why not visit a silversmith's workshop? At the Setesdal Museum in Rysstad there are interesting exhibitions. Rygnestadtunet is one of Norway's most distinctive museums - an original farm compound from the 16th century.Hovden dates its origins back to the Iron Age. At the Hovden Museum of Iron Production you may find out more about this interesting period. In more recent times the development of hydroelectric power has been important for the municipality of Bykle. A visit to the impressive Vatnedalen Dam is highly recommended. For a number of years, the municipality of Evje and Hornnes has been known for its rich mineral deposits. Today it offers visitors a wide range of attractions related to this industry.
In the Mineral Park in Evje you find a spectacular stones and minerals collection - the best private collection of its kind in Europe. In the mines, the world's most beautiful minerals shine and sparkle, and the entire adventure park has this exhibition as a basis. Outdoors there is room to play and take part in a range of activities. In the gift shop there is a large selection of precious stones and sculptures. Spend the day or stay overnight - accommodation is available in an old log house or at a modern campsite.
This glassblower's workshop opened in 2000. It is situated near Bygland Museum in Bygland, and is open to the public. Here is both production and sale of glassware and you will find a selection of unique articles of glass.
The Setesdal Museum in Rysstad is a journey through the culture, history and traditions of Setesdal. Themes covered include the active local public life in the decades leading up to and after the year 1900 and hydropower development in Setesdal, which has provided the basis for progress in the valley over the past century.
The museum is built around a reconstructed melting facility and shows how coal and iron were extracted in the early Middle Ages. The museum has no written information, but by means of sound, light, smoke and scent, the visitor will be taken on a journey 1,000 years back in time.
