Hiking in Setesdal

Surrounded by wild mountain scenery, the tradition-rich Setesdal Valley is a hiking eldorado in Southern Norway.

Setesdal is situated in Southern Norway making it easily accessible from many large airports and ferry points. The landscape varies from flat lowlands to wild mountains. You can choose between short trips or hike for days from cabin to cabin in the higher mountains.

The small towns of Setesdal are all situated along the main route between the port of Kristiansand and the western fjords. The valley changes character from the gentle terrain in the far south to the high mountains in Hovden in the north. Wherever you choose to stop you will find great hiking opportunities nearby.

On the mountain plateaus of Setesdal Vesthei and Setesdal Austhei, the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) has a vast network of tracks with connecting cabins. You can walk for days in mountain terrain, but remember that you need to bring sufficient equipment. The weather can change rapidly in the mountains and carrying a map and a compass is therefore a must.

If you prefer the comfort of a charming place to stay in the valley, you have a range of options. Day trips to peaks with breathtaking views can be undertaken from several locations. In Hovden, you will find marked summit climbs suitable for the whole family, and you can even be awarded a diploma on completing the trip. In Valle there are post boxes where you can write your name down in dedicated books.

In Bygland and Evje there are also plenty of trips to choose from, whether you wish to embark on a day trip or just a short afternoon walk. In Setesdal, hiking is popular with tourists as well as locals, and can be combined with a range of other exciting activities.

The hiking season usually lasts from the middle of June until October.
