Getting to Telemark and around

Telemark lies in the centre of Southern Norway. The road network is dominated by the two highways that cross the county.

By car

The E18 runs through the southern part of Telemark when you drive between Oslo and Kristiansand/Stavanger, whilst the E134 goes through the middle/upper parts of the county to Hardanger and Haugesund.

By train

Telemark is crossed by the Sørlandsbanen Railway with Nordagutu and Bø as central stations, in addition to Vestfoldbanen from Skien/Porsgrunn through Vestfold to Oslo. For timetables and booking, please contact the Norwegian State Railways (NSB).

By bus

An extensive express bus network covers the entire county, with Nor-Way Bussekspress and TIMEkspressen as the main bus companies.

By boat

Telemark has a number of inland boats which sail regularly all summer; "Victoria" and "Henrik Ibsen" between Skien og Dalen, "Telemarken" between Akkerhaugen and Lunde, "Fjøllguten" on Lake Møsvatn, "Fram" on Lake Nisser, "Skarsfos" between Skien and Langesund, and several more.

Telemark is only a short distance from the gateways of Oslo, Kristiansand, Larvik, Sandefjord and Langesund, which have daily ferry and flight connections to the Continent. In fact Telemark is close enough for a weekend visit. The boat routes are covered by DFDS, (Oslo) and Color Line (Larvik, Sandefjord, Oslo).

By aeroplane

The nearest airport with international flight connections is Sandefjord Airport Torp. Skien has a small airport with connections to Western Norway.

Distances

Oslo – Skien 166 kilometres
Kristiansand – Skien 203 kilometres
Bergen – Skien 450 kilometres
Stavanger – Skien  473 kilometres
