Delicious delicacies - snacks and bakery products

All destinations have their own special delicacies, tiny tasty treasures that make every day a spesial day. Here are our local tips.

Tvedestrand

"Munker" is a local speciality in the eastern part of Southern Norway. These are small, round-shaped pastries with a salty and crisp surface, fried in their own "munk iron". Næs Ironworks Museum serve the most delicious "munker".

Arendal

In Arendal, you'll find Southern Norway's only home producer of chocolate. White, light and dark chocolate with all kinds of tastes and shapes - these are the top souvenirs from Heimdal Chokolade in Arendal.

Åmli

Hillestad Gallery bakes the best "kringle" (coffee bread ring) - an airy yeast leavened bakery product with set vanilla custard and nuts, and that little special something that makes it an attraction in Tovdal.

Grimstad

Grimstad bakes the best "purker" in Norway. This yeast leavened bakery product, with soft custard and lots of icing sugar, is a variation of what is called a "skolebrød" other places in Norway. Sold at all the three bakeries Bergshaven, Morterud and Sam Berg, in the middle of town.

Kristiansand

Shrimps bought from the store Fiskeeksperten in Fiskebrygga (the fish quay) in Kristiansand is a typical summer meal. Bring some delicious fresh bread, mayonnaise and lemon and find yourself a place on the pier with a view of the harbour. To be eaten in sunlight.

Lindesnes

At Norway's most southern mainland point, Lindesnes lighthouse, they make their own lighthouse bread with seawater and seaweed from their under water garden. They also grow their own lemons for a fantastic lemon pie. Another speciality is the schnaps "Brottsjø" which is sold in the muesum shop. You buy the bottle with the ingredients, including local herbs and seawater, and add the alcohol of your own taste.

Sirdal

The classical "jødekakene" are made at Tonstad bakery in Sirdal. These biscuits that originated from the Sephardi Jews are famous among tourists. The bakery produces several cakes and breads with recipes from the 1930s.
