Seasons, weather and climate in Fjord Norway

Most visitors come to Fjord Norway during the light summer months, but the greatest wonders are reserved for those travelling in spring and autumn.

Fjord Norway has a mild climate for its latitude, partly due to the influence of the Gulf Stream. Find out what clothes to pack when planning your holiday in Fjord Norway, check out recent snow reports for your destination or go to weather forecast for Fjord Norway.

Summer

Late June to early August is when summer is at its peak. This is when the weather is at its most stable and warmest with sunny, long and bright days. Temperatures reaching 25°C and above are not unusual. Why not try the joys of summer skiing? Stryn is Norway's largest summer ski centre, but you can also try Folgefonna or Galdhøpiggen

Autumn

During the course of September the landscape is painted in golden colours. Red clusters of rowan berries hang on naked branches. Autumn also means harvest time along the fjords. Farm children may stand by the roadside, selling apples, pears and plums – a tasty temptation for travellers.

Winter

Wintertime, usually from November, turns the mountain areas of Western Norway into a skier's paradise. Voss and Stranda are among the most popular resorts. Gales, rain and cloud are likely along the west coast, particularly in winter, and the rainfall is frequent and heavy.

Thanks to the warming Gulf Stream, the Norwegian fjords enjoy a relatively mild climate and remain virtually ice-free even in winter.

Spring

Come springtime the most amazing colours burst forth to honour the warmth of the rising sun. Blossoming orchards along the Hardangerfjord in May are a sight to behold.

Remember that the weather and temperatures can change quickly, especially in the mountains. So whether summer or winter, autumn or spring – bring good footwear and warm clothes.
