Good to know before you travel

Breakdowns and assistance

We hope you do not have a breakdown or an accident during your holiday. But if you do, there is help at hand.

Roads closed during winter

Some Norwegian roads are closed for varying periods during the winter.

Toll roads and AutoPASS

There are around 50 toll stations in Norway. Most of them have automatic fee collection and some have lanes for AutoPASS and for manual payment.

Emergency telephone numbers

Find emergency telephone numbers for fire, police, ambulance and rescue at sea.

Alcohol

The age limit for purchasing beer and wine is 18 years and for spirits it is 20 years.

Electricity

220 volts AC (50 Hz) is the Norwegian standard.

Smoking restrictions

It is not permitted to smoke in public buildings and other places open to the public.

Taxis

There are taxis available in all cities and most towns, and drivers usually speak English.

Passport and visa requirements

On arrival in Norway, you must show a valid passport or other official document that satisfactorily establishes your identity and nationality.

Travelling with pets

Norway is one of the few European countries where rabies is not found.

What clothes should I pack?

Whatever the season, the Norwegian weather is liable to change from day to day. So it is a good idea to bring a selection of items.

Precipitation

There are large differences in the normal annual precipitation in Norway.

Daylight saving time (DST) gives us the opportunity to enjoy sunny summer evenings by moving our clocks an hour forward in the spring.
