Canoeing and kayaking in Norway

In July 2008, the British newspaper The Guardian put Norway on its list over top 10 sea kayaking destinations.

"No collection of sea kayak venues would be complete without including the Norwegian fjords and islands. The ultimate experience is the Lofoten Islands. This is a mountainous archipelago with deep blue shimmering seas where kayaking trips can be combined with climbing and mountaineering. Wilderness is just around the corner yet civilisation is reassuringly close at hand. The fjords and island groups close to Bergen are more accessible for the first timer", writes The Guardian.

One of the fjords close to Bergen that is perfect for paddling, is the Nærøyfjord. All inn all, Western Norway has dozens of fjords worth checking out.

The rest of Norway also offers great opportunities for canoeing and kayaking. Paddling along the Telemark Canal  and on Lake Femunden in the wilderness of Hedmark is especially popular.

You can also go sea kayaking on the Oslofjord or on one of the many lakes in the forests that surround Oslo.

Sea paddling, river paddling and paddling on a lake are three different experiences, but each one offers a special closeness to nature and the chance to observe bird and wildlife that motor noise would never allow.

Hire a canoe or kayak

If you do not have your own canoe or kayak, there are plenty of places to hire one – for example campsites, hotels and tourist information offices. There are organised paddling tours as well as courses for beginners.

Safe paddling

Even if the weather is fine in the morning it does not mean that it will stay that way all day. Check the weather forecast or ask a local before you leave. If the clouds darken and start to gather, it is a good idea to head back. Tell someone where you are going too, and remember lifejackets!
