What to do in Innherred

Visit Innherred's outdoor museums, historic places and art galleries or explore the area by going fishing, cycling or walking.

Visit a museum

At the Stiklestad National Cultural Centre you will find an outdoor museum with exhibitions and guided tours during the summer. The St. Olav Drama is a play depicting the battle at Stiklestad where St. Olav engaged the king's army in the year 1030. This is a key moment in Norwegian history and is considered to be the point at which Christianity first took a solid foothold in Norway. Explore all this at The Stiklestad National Cultural Centre.

Egge Museum is another open air museum, which includes a distinctive 19th century farm-yard with buildings originating from farms in the area. The museum also covers newer history of agriculture and an old street from the town of Steinkjer.

History from World War II is presented at Falstadsenteret in Levanger.

Water activities

A number of companies offer canoe rental and there are plenty of possibilities for both fresh- and saltwater fishing in the local lakes and fjords. Try the Verdal River for salmon fishing.

The Hopla water system in Levanger and the 50 lakes in Steinkjer are excellent for fishing. They are all within easy reach.

Most of the fishing spots also offer some form of overnight accommodation. This is the case at Skarnsundet Fjord Centre, where you can rent kayaks too. You can also rent a canoe at Føllingstua Camping and Steinkjer Kommuneskoger.

There are two public swimming pools in the area; Dampsaga Bad in Steinkjer and Trøndehallen in Levanger.

Cycling

Biking is a great way of getting around Innherred. You can hire a bike at the tourist information office in Steinkjer.

Walking

Norway's geographical centre is situated near the gateway to the Blåfjella-Skjækerfjella National Park

Egge in Steinkjer is a unique area, rich in historical sites and other cultural findings. It is also great for shorter walks, offering pleasant views over the Trondheimfjord and the town of Steinkjer.

There are nice walking trails in and around Levanger town centre.

Try a guided caving tour in Steinkjer from Mokk Farm.

Should you wish to ascend to loftier heights without going on a mountain hike, Innherred has a lot to offer. Popular spots include Oftenåsen Hill in Steinkjer, Hårskallen in Levanger and Tittinghalla in Inderøy.

Play golf

Golf enthusiasts will find courses in both Verdal and Steinkjer. At Stiklestad Golf Club in Verdal, you can play on an 18-hole course and relax in the new club house. Steinkjer has a nine-hole course.

Go-karting

There is an outdoor go-kart track just 12 kilometres from central Steinkjer. Follow fv. 763 in the direction of Ogndalen to reach it.
