Summer activities in Elverum

Renaelva and Glomma are fantastic rivers for fishing, cycling and walking in the Finnskogen forest, and you can even play golf at Rena and in Elverum.

Fishing in the Elverum region

The best and most popular fishing spots in Elverum and Åmot are on the Glomma and Renaelva rivers. There are also plenty of smaller watercourses in the region, as well as lakes and tarns, where the fishing is excellent. The Glomma and Renaelva rivers are close to roads and thereby easy to get to. In many places, special fishing signposts direct you down from the road to the fishing spots.

Våler has an abundance of fine fishing spots. The Fiskeløystjernet tarn in Risberget is beautiful and contains trout and perch. And Nordre Fløyen, with its gnarled pine trees and islands, has been described as Våler's answer to the Femund area. The Kynnavassdraget watercourse, which is made up of several interconnected lakes, is ideal for combined fishing and canoeing or kayaking trips.

The most popular types of fish in the Glomma and Renaelva rivers are trout and grayling. You can also catch whitefish, pike and perch. A few of the lakes have a certain level of trout stocks, but the most common types of fish in these inland lakes are perch and pike. Våler also has bream, pike, roach and trout.

Cycling

Cycling in the Elverum region is through an open landscape, with lush fields, pretty farms and the Glomma river winding its way southward, down through the Østerdalen and Glåmdalen valleys. If you prefer, you can cycle east through the forests, along country roads or forest tracks. The conditions here really are perfect for wonderful cycling holidays in gentle terrain.

The forests have been managed for many generations, which has resulted in a well-developed network of forest tracks. This means that the forest is easily accessible to everyone. Signposted cycle routes take two-wheeled adventurers deep into the Finnskogen forest, with its very special history. Forest and water define the area – and as someone once said: 'The silence is barely audible'.

The cycle routes are perfect for keen cyclists of all ages, particularly touring cyclists who can manage longer distances. Some of the routes pass close to towns and villages, where you can find a range of facilities that cater for cyclists, while others require more planning in terms of food, drink and accommodation.

Walking

The Finnskogen forest lies in Hedmark and Värmland, straddling both sides of the border between Norway and Sweden. It is a place where the cultures of Norway, Sweden and the forest Finns meet. At the end of the 1500s, there was a major immigration of Finns to Värmland, giving rise to the name of Finnskogen forest, and the forest Finns also settled on the Norwegian side.

This is where you can find the Finnskogleden trail, a marked trail that winds its way south for 240 kilometres from Søre Osen in Trysil in the north to Morokulien in Eidskog and Eda. It provides a unique opportunity to experience this fantastic forest area, with its exciting culture and history. The trail takes you along old paths and byways, through two countries and nine municipalities, past viewpoints and Finnish crofts, cloudberry moors and fishing lakes.
